You know your plant better than anyone, and that's the problem.
When you walk the same floor every day, you stop seeing it. Workarounds turn into standard work, and gaps turn into "just how we do things." The questions that matter most go unasked: Are we managing by fact? Could we recover from a major disruption? Does everyone know where we're headed?
The SMBEA evaluation brings trained, independent examiners to your site to see what you can't. Here's why it's worth your time.
The profile pays off on its own
It all starts with a 25-question Application Profile built on the Baldrige framework. It gives a snapshot of your organization without the cost and effort of a full Baldrige application.
Don't underestimate this step. The first 14 questions ask you to name your key customers and their requirements, your suppliers, workforce segments, regulators, competitors, and your strategic challenges and advantages. Many small and mid-size manufacturers have never put all of that in one place.
The rest of the questions cover strategy, leadership, customers, measurement, workforce and operations. If your team struggles to explain how you make decisions with data, or how you'd recover from an emergency, you've found an improvement opportunity before an examiner ever arrives.
Expect productive debate, too. Bringing your leadership team together to complete the profile often surfaces different views on priorities, strategy, and even who your real competitors are. Better to align now.
Then get feedback you can act on
After the evaluation, you receive written and live feedback from examiners. It names specific strengths, opportunities for improvement, and recommendations. This isn't a generic checklist. It's an outside view of your operation, grounded in a proven framework.
It's a low-risk first step into performance excellence. You can also send one of your own people to serve as an examiner in the next cycle, and they'll bring new skills straight back to your plant.
The time commitment is manageable
Plan on about one leadership meeting plus a few hours of drafting for the profile, roughly 4 to 8 hours of total effort over a week or two. The evaluation itself takes six to eight hours of your time, spread over several weeks. If the profile takes longer, that tells you something: the gaps you're uncovering are part of the value.
The benefits go beyond feedback
Participants gain:
Visibility: Sterling press releases and promotion across print, web and social media, plus recognition at the annual awards event.
Access: No-cost seats at the Sterling Executive Roundtable, a free expo table at the Sterling Conference, and reduced conference registration.
Connections: An introduction to the regional manufacturing ecosystem through plant tours, webinars and expositions.
Talent: Recognition helps you recruit and keep people who want to work for a high-performing manufacturer. It also shows your community that manufacturing careers are worth pursuing.
Award recipients are also invited to join the Sterling Council Board of Directors at the Honorary Designation level, free for the first year.
