Sterling Council
Adam Dunlap, Executive Assistant at Florida Sterling Council, has been with the company since 2016. He is currently working on his Bachelors degree in Creative Writing at Florida State University. Adam mostly works on creating and editing graphics and putting together the yearly Sterling Management System Resource Guide. In his free time, Adam enjoys watching movies, camping, fishing, and hiking.
You are the Executive Assistant and graphics extraordinaire. What does that mean, and where have we seen your creations lately?
I wouldn’t say I am a graphics extraordinaire, but it’s true I do a lot of graphic design work at Florida Sterling. My main task is to put together the yearly Florida Sterling Resource Guide. This is a task as daunting as it is fun. I taught myself how to use Adobe InDesign in order to be able to put the resource guide together. I also create the Friday spotlights and other graphics that you can see on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook.
You have been with Sterling (on and off) for four years. What inspired you to join the team (and come back!)?
I initially joined Sterling because I was working a food service job and wanted a more stable office working environment. I left Sterling for about eight months to volunteer at a state park down in central Florida but came right back. What can I say? It’s an awesome place to work!
How many times have you worked our annual conference, and what is your favorite part about it?
I have been to the Sterling Conference once before – in 2018. My favorite part by far was the expo. I thoroughly enjoyed walking around and seeing all of the booths that various organizations had set up.
You are a Creative Writing major. Care to tell us a little bit about the last thing you wrote (non-academic), and what you plan to do with that degree?
The last piece I wrote was about a Florida state park ranger who discovered bigfoot. I love to write fiction and intend to teach English someday, possibly overseas. There are certain teachers who have greatly inspired me over the years, and I want to be one of those teachers.
If you had the choice – out of everyone in this world, alive or dead – who would you choose to be your mentor?
That’s a tough one but if I had to choose one person it would be Anthony Bourdain. I’ve read his memoir (Kitchen Confidential) four times over the last couple of years. I also thoroughly enjoyed every one of his T.V. shows as a host who travels to other countries to taste their cuisine and report on the culture. I really look up to him and hope to some day be able to travel myself.
